Type VII C was a modified version of the successful VII B. The VII
C came into service starting in 1940 and it was this boat that faced
defeat in the Allied anti-submarine campaign in late 1943 and 1944. The U-Flak was a modified VII C to be used as a surface escort
for attack U-Boats. Conversions were short lived and all U-Flaks were
converted back to attack boats.
In 1944 some type VII C submarines were tried as carriers of
""Biber"" midget submarines, but the experiment was unsuccessful."
