The first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine to be equipped with
ballistic missiles was «К-19» (NATO code - Hotel class). The submarine
began its military service on November 12, 1960. It was designed on the
basis of the earlier «К-3» (NATO code - November class). Design
limitations were such that it was possible to place only three D-2
launch systems with surface start on the submarine. Eight more boats of
this class were later constructed but numerous setbacks and accidents
earned «К-19» the nickname "Hiroshima" among sailors.
